The "cuerda seca" is one of the characteristic techniques of Andalusian ceramics. It came to its heyday at the time of the Catholic Monarchs, as a result of Muslim influence mixing with that of Gothic-Renaissance. This technique, which was already in use in the Umayyad period and was fully developed in Al-Andalus in 10th century, uses pure, unalloyed colours, separating them by a line, resulting in images featuring very bright, embossed surfaces of pure colours, similar in appearance to a stained glass window.
The "cuerda seca" can be combined with other techniques to achieve a variety of effects.
"La Aljaba" was born out of the love of clay and ceramics of three women artists, who in 1998 decided to create this workshop as a business project in La Carolina, Jaén, Spain. One of the founders, Julia M. Tabernero, ran the workshop alone for a time, then in 2013 left it in the hands of her daughter, a designer and Fine Arts graduated. After many years of hard work, Quiver has become one of the best workshops specializing in this art form.
Aurora Balaguer, Julia M. Tabernero and Rosa Rodero.
